Spay/Neuter Clinic

About Our Clinic

The clinic provides low-cost dog and cat spay and neuter surgeries for Fauquier County and surrounding areas for healthy dogs and cats over 8 weeks of age and weighing at least 3 pounds.

A current rabies vaccination certificate is required for all animals over 6 months of age and those without will be given a vaccination at the time of surgery, if greater than 12 weeks of age.

Heartworm tests will be performed on dogs 6 months of age or older when not on heartworm preventative and Felv and FIV testing for cats are available on request.

The facts about Spaying and neutering...

What is spaying and neutering?

Spaying refers to female pets and is a surgical procedure in which both ovaries and uterus are removed.  Neutering refers to male pets and is a surgical procedure in which both testicles are removed.

When should my pet be spayed or neutered?

The earlier the surgery the better it is for the animal.  Since most cats and dogs are able to reproduce by 6 months of age, we recommend surgery between 2 and 4 months of age.

Will the procedure hurt my pet?

No, during their surgery your pet will be fully anesthetized and will not feel any pain.  As with any surgery there may be some discomfort associated with the procedure post operatively but this is kept to a minimum through the use of analgesic medications.

Why should you spay or neuter your pet?

It is good for your pet....

  • Spaying or neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.
  • Spaying or neutering eliminates or reduces the incidence of a number of health problems including mammary cancer, testicular cancer and uterine infection.

It is good for you....

  • Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions.
  • Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray indoors and mark territory.
  • Spaying a cat or dog eliminates her heat cycle.  Female cats in heat often cry incessantly and attract unwanted male animals.  Female dogs can bleed excessively.

It is good for the community...

  • Communities spend millions of dollars to control unwanted animals.
  • Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks.  Animal shelters are overburdened with surplus animals.
  • Stray pets and homeless animals get into trash containers; defecate in public areas or on private lawns.
  • Some stray animals also scare away or kill birds and other wildlife.
